Depends: Follow directions given tom you by your dentist.  Take antibiotics if given.  Keep the area clean and eat a healthy diet.  Your body should take care of the rest.

No: If the abscess does not require root canal therapy or extraction of the affected tooth, then most likely periodontal surgery would be involved. In addition, an abscess on a previously treated root canal would probably require an apicoectomy.

Yes: After the tooth is removed.  The dentist will clean out the infected tissues around the tooth.  Then the blood will fill in where tooth used to be and form a clot.  If the clot is lost prematurely you will get dry socket (quite painful).  But, the clot (or the hole as you called it)  will eventually be filled in by bone and gum tissue.

A little: Your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the site. You can request pain medication for pain that may occur when the local anesthetic wears off.

Cannot predict: Without seeing the area before and after and the damage done by the abscess it is not possible to say. Are you on antibiotic ? Often this will help the swelling go down. Keep an eye on it as sometimes these do not heal right away and require further drainage. Do not hesitate to contact the Dentist who did the extraction if unsure. Good Luck.

Maybe: The abscess formed because an infection inside the tooth drained out into the jaw and then through the gum. You must get rid of the original infection before you can get rid of the abscess. A properly done root canal or a tooth extraction are the only two ways to accomplish this. If advanced gum disease is also present then the tooth usually must be removed.

Depends : If you just had the tooth extracted, you should only bite on gauze for about an hour.  If you keep gauze in your mouth longer, you may pull out your blood clot.  You can also bite on a wet tea bag for ten minutes.  The tannic acid will help clot the blood.  Do not suck on anything, smoke or spit for 24 hours. If you continue to bleed, contact your dentist.
