Sweetness : Aka hemoglobin a1c, is the most specific and sensitive test widely available to detect not only diabetes, but also how well or not controlled it is. There are other research level labs being looked at, a we are trying to figure out as early as possible who is pre diabetic, so we can aggressively go after your risks. Diet, exercise, are still the mainstay of treatment. Fda has not approved meds.

: HbA1C  of 5.7 to 6.4 is considered. Prediabetes. Blood sugar fasting should be below 100 to be normal and above 126 is diabetes. If you are overweight, reducing weight is always a good idea. If you are inactive, adding an exercise routine is helpful. If you are consuming prepackaged food, change to healthy food. Please repeat these tests after making these lifestyle changes. Good question: The glycosylated hemoglobin is not always diagnostic of diabetes. Certain conditions or drugs can affect the level of glycosylated hemoglobin. In those situations, glucose tolerance test would be better in diagnosing dm.

Depends on lab but:: Most likely mild prediabetes-not diabetes itself. A1c is a 3 month snapshot of your average sugar and tells us yours is slightly high. You are at risk for diabetes and also increased risk for heart disease and stroke. You are lucky and can make changes to avert some of these risks through lifestyle modifications. Get your cholesterol numbers too and change your destiny while still young.

: HbA1c is a measure of glycosolated hemaglobin and is a measurement of blood glucose bound to hemaglobin and gives information of what the sugars having been running for the past 120 days.  Nondiabetic ranges are 4 to 5.9% while 5.9% to 6.4.5 are Pre-Diabetic and Diabetes is greater than 6.4%.  You are in prediabetic range.  However, this sugar can be improved by change in diet and exercise.

Yes: There is a guideline that we follow for diagnosis of dm. Hgba1c of &gt;6.4 is considered dm. Taking bs sporadically may not catch the times of bs&gt;200 like after eating. Anyway the answer is yes, that is dm.

HbA1c levels: Diagnostic criteria by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) include the following : A fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher. Or a HbA1C 6.5% level. A 6.1% level is under the prediabetes range,  hence why it would be recommended to start diet,  exercise and visit your doctor.

hello.  my follow up cbc came back with hemoglobin 17.4, hematocrit 49.4 and all other values normal.  two months about i had a cbc with a hemoglobin of 18.2.  so all values are normal now and i wanted to know if i should be concerned with anything. ?

Still high: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the data you provided warrants that you consult a hematologist to rule out Polycythemia Vera.

Not really: anemia is defined as having hemoglobin below than the normal range. just because your MCHCC or MCH are slightly low -it does not mean you are anemic. you need to look at the right index.

May be: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, iron deficiency is not uncommon in women in their reproductive years. It would be safe to take oral iron and multivitamin supplements and recheck hemoglobin at your next visit to your doctor.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
