It may hurt, but...: There is a small piece of nail still embedded in the corner. You need to get that out. If you can't get it out on your own, a podiatrist can. Sometimes this can be done without numbing the toe, but often, anesthesia is necessary. If it is a chronic condition, there is a very successful surgery that can be done to permanently correct the problem.

Removal, antibiotics: It sounds like you have an ingrown nail, and if it's infected, you'll likely need antibiotics, possibly a nail procedure. Just the painful border can be removed, or the entire nail if necessary (you're numbed up for this, don't worry!). While waiting to see your doctor, soak the toe 10 min/day in luke warm water and epsom salts, use a small amount of antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandaid.

Complete resolution?: If you have systemic disease, diabetes, clotting disorders, malignancies, etc., consult with your GP. If it is an ingrown nail, is it infected? Your doc may start you on soaks and/or antibiotics. Part of the nail is under the skin, and grows from the matrix. In many situations the portion is removed surgically in the office, and a chemical applied, destroying it. Be aware that it may return.

Not really, unless: Unless a person is skilled in getting blood out through a nail to drain a nail hematoma, he should not try it at home. If the injury is old, his primary care doctor can take a look in-person or online on video, to see if anything needs to be done. Often, nothing needs to be done except wait for the new nail to push out the old nail. For new hematomas, draining the blood relieves pain.

Difficult condition : You were doing fine with your description until you said”pus” was present “time to time.”   Some fungus do present with an exudate but more serous  or clear in color.   If fungus is within the nail plate, resolving is more difficult.  Many prescription and over-the-counter products are available. I am not aware of one product better than the other. Seek help of podiatrist if assistances required

Trauma or infection: Common causes of toenails separating from the nailbeds include injury (especially if the nails are not trimmed, the ends may get pulled up when walking or crawling) and infection - fungal toenail infection. Trim the nails, and if there is any discoloration, roughening or other signs of infection, ask your doctor if treatment for a fungal infection is needed.
