Trauma or infection: Common causes of toenails separating from the nailbeds include injury (especially if the nails are not trimmed, the ends may get pulled up when walking or crawling) and infection - fungal toenail infection. Trim the nails, and if there is any discoloration, roughening or other signs of infection, ask your doctor if treatment for a fungal infection is needed.

Shoes too small: Without seeing the patient, I can only speak from experience. Children often develop this problem as a result of their shoes being too short. Children at this age begin growing very fast, including their feet. Make sure the shoes are a half size to a full size larger than their feet.
