Removal, antibiotics: It sounds like you have an ingrown nail, and if it's infected, you'll likely need antibiotics, possibly a nail procedure. Just the painful border can be removed, or the entire nail if necessary (you're numbed up for this, don't worry!). While waiting to see your doctor, soak the toe 10 min/day in luke warm water and epsom salts, use a small amount of antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandaid.

Ingrown toenail: Unfortunately it sounds like an ingrown toenail. Look for redness, warmth, pain and drainage. If their is drainage, what color is it? You should see a foot and ankle specialist and remove the offending nail border.
