gum pain and gingivitis? over the last month one of my upper front teeth has become very sensitive, and now the gum above it is also quite sore. is this gingivitis?

Without : Without an exam it is difficult to determine the nature of the problem.  There may be several reasons for the symptoms ranging from gum disease exposing the root of the tooth to an infection.  The only way to tell for sure is to see you dentist for an exam.

Is there a bump?: If you are having pain above a tooth, it is possible that you may be developing an abscess, which happens at the end of the root, underneath the gums. If there is a bump above (or below on a lower) the tooth, this may be a gum boil, where infection collects without anywhere to go. Have a dentist evaluate this asap to avoid a true dental emergency with swelling and severe pain.

Clove oil: Clove oil can be an effective oral anesthetic.  In studies, it has performed just as well as topical Benzocaine (anbesol and oragel).  It's safe when used correctly in small amounts, but can cause liver and respiratory problems when ingested in large quantities.  It's found in health food stores. To use it, apply a very small amount to a cotton swab and apply gently to the affected area.

Infection: Or a fracture. Can't tell for sure without a radiograph and exam.See your dentist to know for sure and to have it treated.

Not much to tell..: The tooth in question was apparently asymptomatic for a long, long time. This may be due to a cavity, gum disease, or you may have fractured the tooth overnight while grinding. Call a local dentist for an evaluation and treatment.

Open contact: An open interproximal contact will cause an acute stage of gingivitis that will cause pain and localized bleeding in the area due to food impaction.  Good contact between teeth will prevent or alleviate food impaction and ultimately gum pain.  If you have to floss due to food stuck after every time you eat, you definitely have open interproximal contact that needed to be close.  Call your dentist.

OTC pain meds: The pain meds will mask the symptoms until you get to a dentist to have your problems treated. Unfortunately, dentistry is not a do it yourself profession. The sooner you call the sooner you will feel better and the better chance you will have to save your teeth.

Loose Adult Tooth: Yes you should see a dentist promptly.  If the root (blood supply and nerve) are still intact the tooth may be stabilized and saved.

Anesthetic gel.: Anesthetic gel is avaliable in several forms.  Those containing either Benzocaine or xylocaine (lidocaine) work best.

Oral Surgeon: See your oral surgeon for evaluation and treatment. Might be time for those wisdom teeth to be removed. Get checked. Good luck.
