Infection: Or a fracture. Can't tell for sure without a radiograph and exam.See your dentist to know for sure and to have it treated.

Food impaction: Open contact interproximally may cause food impaction and developed localized gum pain. If tooth is painful, nerve may be affected. Open margin on the crown may cause bone loss due to localized periodontitis. See your dentist for exam, diagnosis, and treatment.
