Accepted Answer

Yes but: You have to be careful and do it right.  You don't want to get malnourished and you don't want to eat heavily after fasting because that will result in "dumping syndrome" where the food just goes through you.  You also don't want to slow your metabolism - the goal is to keep the metabolism high while periodically starving it.  Check out an article in the atlantic from last year.

Fasting: Fasting is a terrible and unsafe way to lose fat. It puts you into a catabolic state which breaks down your own fat and muscle to feed your vital organs. Ketosis, also takes place as the body uses fat instead of glucose to supply the brain. You should eat healthy and exercise to lose fat, and never fast. Fasting will slow your metabolism and make you gain weight when you stop fasting.

Caution fasting!: Fasting for a few days may not hurt most people who are healthy as long as they remain hydrated. However, fasting for long periods of time is not good for you. To be healthy your body needs vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from food. Without this symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, constipation &amp; dehydration are seen. It is life threatening to fast too long!

cholesterol test: A fatty meal within 24hr of a fasting lipid test might cause a problem with the results in a given individual. Best to be on one's usual food pattern in the week before a blood test.

Accepted Answer

Yes & no: I assume you're not 100 years old as noted in your profile. Regardless, yes, you might be able to lose a kg by fasting but that would most likely be water weight. So in answer to 2nd part of your question, no, you'd probably regain weight once you started eating/drinking normally again, although it wouldn't be fat weight per se. Best to eat sensibly each day, aiming for 500cal/d less eaten = 1#/wk.

Stop worrying: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. I'm going to assume you're basically healthy. Especially, low triglycerides means nothing. Relax and be thankful for good health.

See below: If your fasting glucose is elevated but you are not diabetic you have about 60% of preventing progression of the process. You should lose about 10% of your body weight, more if you are overweight, exercise at least 30 minutes/day, 5 days/week and gradually increase the intensity of exercise. if you take ssri for>8yrs, does some get stored in fat tissue, so fasting/detox, you end up with more drug in the blood like addicts during rehab?

Possible?: Many drugs are stored in fat tissue. If the ssri is stored in your fat and then you burn this same fat that contains the drug, then it seems posible that you could experience drug like effects from this stored psychoactive chemical.

i've been trying to lose weight since january, it's been 5 months and i only lost 10 lbs so far, and i need to lose at least 70 lbs. ok ... i'm not doing exercise i understand i have to but 10 lbs only?
i've tried low fat, low carb, fasting none work?

: It is important to know that your general medical condition is not causing the resistance to weight loss. Checking thyroid function, fasting blood sugar as an example are important. About 1.5 pounds per week with a good balanced diet that will include good fats, carbohydrates for immediate fuel, proteins to include lean meats and regular reasonable exercise with good sleep habits should help.
