Autoimmune: There is likely a connection between the uveitis and ulcerative colitis as both can be autoimmune related. If the uveitis is quiet, perhaps you have has a change in prescription causing intermittent blurry vision. Your eyes should be dilated to rule out associated macular edema or vitreous inflammation that could cause blurry vision.

Occur together: Ulcerative colitis (and other colonic inflammations) cause joint pain and inflammation of the eyes in some patients.  It is not normal, but neither is ulcerative colitis.  The treatment for joint pain is more difficult because nsaids are contraindicated in ulcerative colitis.  The eye inflammation (uveitis) can usually be treated with topical drops.  See your ophthalmologist and GI specialist.

Ulcerative Colitis: (uc) is an inflammatory disease that primarily affects the large intestine. It is part of a spectrum of inflammatory bowel diseases. About 10% of people with uc can experience ocular signs or symptoms. The redness can be due to dry eye, episcleritis or even uveitis. The later two are inflammatory conditions of the eye that need immediate treatment. Please see your ophthalmologist for evaluation.

for a person with ulcerative colitis at what point should you head to the doctor or er when it comes to bleeding from the intestines?

: Bloody stool along with mucus is common in UC or IBD. However, you should go to urgent care or ER when bleeding is heavy (more than 6 bloody stools/day) and you have other constitutional symptoms such as fever, severe fatigue, lightheadedness, near syncope, palpitation, etc.

THe same as: In the younger years. Pain, bleeding, anemia, dehydtation, obstruction perforation. All of this are less well tolerated as we get into the older age groups. Properly treated and controlled ulcerative colitis in remission, does not increase your problems in the future.

SIJ Subluxation: ? About intestinal spasm causing inflammation, bleeding, &amp; bloating. These are symptoms along a spectrum from mild (IBS) to severe diarrhea (Crohn's) to bleeding (Ulcerative Colitis). The likely etiology of these disorders are varying degrees of autonomic dysfunctions.  IBS-D reflects parasympathetic overdrive &amp; IBS-C reflects sympathetic overdrive.

i suffer from ulcerative colitis. ive just found out that my cat has giardia, am i at risk of contracting it? im worried because giardia causes problems in the intestinals. what should i do? im in panic?

: Giardia is passed through the fecal debris contaminating water a person ingests. It does not jump from the cat to you like a simple germ. Practice simple handwashing and you should be fine.

: Yes. But don't self diagnose. Best is to get checked by a gastroenterologist.

: Anything that causes fever can result in night sweats, which usually are the result of fever breaking during the night. Inflammatory bowel disease certainly can do this, but it most likely when your UC or Crohn's disease have flared up. However, night sweats rarely would be the only symptom of these problems. Discuss with your doctor. Good luck.

is the antibiotic cephalexin 500mg 4x/ day safe for someone who suffers from ulcerative colitis or crohns. would it cause flare ups? it was given due to a deep cut. the last thing we want is to mess something related to the colitis?

: People with such inflammatory bowel diseases are at increased risk for.c diff.infections which also are more serious for them. I would ask the MD who prescribed the antibiotic if the patient truly needs it. I have been more circumspect in prescribing antibiotics for patients with IBD or who are immunosuppressed.
