: In theory this could happen, if the other person has HIV, but it never has:  in the 40+ years of the known worldwide HIV/AIDS epidemic, nobody is known to have been infected in this way. If it was a very large exposure (like blood all over your face in taking care of an accident or gunshot victim), see a doctor for advice. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

No risk, no worry: Blood never transmits tapeworm. In the distant past, pork was more likely to carry trichinosis, a parastici disease (very different than tape worm), but that hasn't been a problem in the US or other industrialized countries for over 50 years. There may be rare exceptions for improperly raised hogs on small family farms, but never for commercial pork, which is just as safe as beef, chicken, etc.

No Chances: As long as the eye was rinsed within a minute or two there is no risk of contacting hepatits c in this setting.

i was removing an iv cannula for a patient and the blood splashes on my eyebrow. i washed my eye after but i feel some of the blood got into my eye. can i contract hiv?

Accepted Answer

: If the patient has HIV, you are at risk. If you work at the hospital, your hospital can test the patient. If the patient has HIV, you should get post-exposure prophylaxis. Talk to the employee health folks at your hospital.

: Zero risk. You can't get HIV from something like this. You do not even need testing and certainly not PEP. No ethical doctor or clinic would agree to give you a PEP prescription in this situation. You'll never get HIV until and unless you have unprotected sex or share drug injection equipment with an infected partner. Don't worry about it.

: HIV blood splashed on eyes ,nose and mouth areas has about 1 out a 1.000 chances of infection. Now if there any cuts, scrapes or broken skin the risk is much higher. The amount of blood and how sick the person is contributes to the risk .Alway wash area with clean water, salt water or saline in a steady stream.

Pot is not the cure: Marijuana will not make the redness better.  In fact it can make it worse.  Dryness and allergy or the chief causes.

Don't: The only safe way to get blood out of the eye is by having an eye doctor surgically remove it - but only if it is necessary to be removed. Blood on the white of the eye (subconjunctival hemorrhage) will resolve over time (several weeks) and can be made worse by trying to remove it.

It depends: It depends on where the blood is.  If it is just on the white part of the eye (the sclera) it will usually resolve over a week, like a bruise.  If it is inside the eye, you should see your eye care provider as this is more serious.

Sub conj hemorrhage: Blood spots on the eye surface are typically harmless but can take 1-2 weeks to resolve completely.  They are often due to a hard cough, sneeze or bowel movement.  They can also occur when you rub your eyes.  The risk is greater in patients who use blood thinners or Aspirin on a regular basis.
