Ice and neosporin .: Put neosporin  first and use ice cold wet cloth and put on the ear lobe, 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for 1 hour and repeat if necessary as often as needed if still swollen.

Dermatitis vs infect: The question is-is this an allergic metal contact dermatitis or a bacterial infection? Unless there is pus draining from the piercing site, it can be difficult to tell them apart. Repeated warm moist heat packs with a topical antibiotic may help. Sometimes antistaphylococcal antibiotics are necessary. If you are allergic to nickel in the stud, this will probably need to be  replaced.

A : A split ear piercing can certainly be repaired. It is a procedure that can be done in the office with local numbing medicine only. The key is to recreate a natural, non-notched outer ear margin.

No: What you describe is the classic sebaceous cyst of  the ear lobe.  Until  the entire cyst wall is removed, drainage alone will allow reaccumulation of sebaceous material and reformation of the cyst.  There are never malignant.

Remove while you can: It is evident s/he felt you could remove the post now, which is very important. Whether or not it abscesses will depend on the type of germ &amp; success of treatment. If you don't get the post out now, the tissue may swell and trap it requiring it to be cut out. Most of these infections require post removal. The hole closes &amp; must be re-done months later.

Assess for Infection: 17 yr old; redness, swelling, yellow crust at earring hole. This can be due to infection or a reaction to metal in earrings. There is no mention of pain which is an indicator of infection. If pain is present &amp; other symptoms are worsening, infection is probable &amp; you should see your doctor. Otherwise do not wear earrings x 3-4 days, cleanse area with soap/water, change to hypoallergenic earrings.

Contact Dermatitis?: It is very common to have an allergy to a metal in an earring that typically starts in the earring hole. Sometimes it can become secondarily infected. I would start with an over the counter topical antibiotic once daily and a topical Hydrocortisone also once daily. Avoid earrings with nickel. If this doesn't work you should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Pierced or clip on?: Consider not wearing earrings.  Sometimes thin metal posts with very lightweight earrings (such as small stud) might be more comfortable.

Remove it: If the starter bud had dug into the tissue, it runs the risk of getting embedded in the tissue and then possibly infected. Remove the starter bud and replace it with another longer stem earring. If the earlobe is red and tender you may need antibiotics.
