Remove while you can: It is evident s/he felt you could remove the post now, which is very important. Whether or not it abscesses will depend on the type of germ & success of treatment. If you don't get the post out now, the tissue may swell and trap it requiring it to be cut out. Most of these infections require post removal. The hole closes & must be re-done months later.
