Massage is Good: The skin is a great barrier, and most oils cannot penetrate to the living cells. The massaging action of application does help. Vaseline works well to, better than mederma, and much less expensive.

Accepted Answer

Possible: There is no proven scar healer out there that I am aware of, keeping the area clean and soft should help with decreasing the amount of scar build up.  I have always thought that sunblock for the first year on a scar is important to avoid excessive scarring as sun damage can exacerbate a scar.  Most scars overtime though do improve, the body usually does a good job at healing itself.

Myth but use if help: Many of my patients swear by the benefits of vitamin e and so i generally don't dissuade them but there is very little science to support its use. It is probably the massage, (which we know helps scars)  that is used to apply the vitamin e, which is actually providing the improvements observed. Massage with any clean oil 3-4 times a day. Silicon gel trips are morel likely to improve the scar.

As often as you wish: Do not expect much in the way of results. If it causes inflammation, stop using it. Even dermatologists treating acne scars can only make them less conspicuous.

Accepted Answer

Massage with oil.: Oral vitamin E is not harmful (except in high doses), but massage with the vitamin E oil (or any oil) is likely more helpful than taking it orally. Ultraviolet avoidance is also critical when the scar is immature and pink, to minimize hyperpigmentation. Use a high spf chapstik for facial scars--easy to use and keep with you!

Never: Vitamin ee may be a good moisturizing agent but there is very little research to show it will improve scars other than the effects of massaging it in and certainly it will not remove it.

Accepted Answer

Sure.: It's more about the massage with vitamin E oil, which can be done at bedtime or after showering for about 5 minutes. Then apply the Mederma and you have the best of both worlds! nothing will "remove" or eliminate scars, however. Also avoid ultraviolet to prevent premanent hyperpigmentation--as long as the scar is pink keep out of sun or tanning bed.

No: The oiliness will make them slightly less visible while it stays on your skin. I'm really sorry that your acne didn't get treated when it should have been. Nothing you can do will affect your scars, but a dermatologist can make them less visible with dermabrasion, filler, laser or microsurgery. It's your choice; especially if you're a man, note that several hollywood leads kept their for "tough".

No: Vitamin e is an antioxidant that can protect against sun and free radical damage but has no demonstrated role in modifying scarring.

Accepted Answer

Not effective: Acne scars are forever.  Vitamin e oil in my experience is not good at treating these scars.  The most effective means to treat acne scars (there are 3 types of acne scars) is usually to have skin resurfacing with an instrument called fraxel.  You will need several treatments and they aren't cheap, but they are among the most effective and safest ways to treat acne scars.
