Chronic tonsillitis: Tonsillitis is generally brought on by bacteria or viruses.

The chronic inflammation/infection is brought on by poor immunity, resistant bacteria, someone at home being a carrier and is getting you infected again and again.  There is a possibility of an undrained abscess, but you will need a CT for this.

You might do a rundown on all the things going into your mouth.  You might find an answer.

there is white stuff on my tonsils..suspected tonsillitis as its painful to swallow..there is also some black stuff there. should i be worried about the black? i am a smoker

Throat culture: A throat culture will help your physician in deciding which antibiotic is indicated based on the bacteria grown. Strep A is a common cause and if you are concerned regarding malignancy, samples may be sent to the Pathology lab.
In the meantime, monitor for fever, drink soothing liquids and rest until seen.

Tonsillitis : Tonsillitis comes from an infection with a virus or bacteria, not cancer. Cancer is not a communicable disease.

Inflammation: Swelling is often associated with inflammation. Tonsillitis refers to inflammation of the tissues in the back of the throat. The tonsils may or may not contain pus when inflamed.

Needs clarification: Infected tonsils and lymphoma are two completely different things (lymphoma is a type of cancer). Having said that, yes if one has an acute tonsillitis, they can spread it to someone if they are playing tonsil hockey (kissing) with someone else....[unfortunately that will be the only hockey we will see for awhile due to the nhl lockout :( ].

Tonsillectomy: The Criteria for tonsillectomy in Adults is: 3 episodes of acute tonsillitis yearly for 3 years, 5 episodes yearly for 2 years or seven episodes in one year. Each episodes of tonsillitis should be documented with one or more of the following clinical features. temperature&gt;38.3 degrees, cervical adenopathy, tonsillar exudate, or positive test for group A Beta Hemolytic Streptococcs

Diseased: Diseased tonsils leave openings called crypts. Pus or food particle can be trapped there. Remember: three DOCUMENTED strep infections in a 12-month period is criteria for consideration of tonsillectomy.

i had a mild case of tonsillitis in late july, 2x since xmas, now my tonsils are red and swollen again.how long before i can ask to rmv them?

Tonsillectomy: Removal of tonsils is rarely done nowadays and certainly not after only two episodes of tonsillitis which usually responds well to antibiotic treatment. Your physician or otolaryngologist will advise you wisely.

i've been diagnosed with tonsillitis , my tonsils are very swollen and my uvula is stuck to one. is this meant to happen? should i do some thing?

ENT/UC-now: You definitely have both tonsillitis with uvulitis; however, you must be checked and examined for a peritonsillar abscess-asap.
