Tonsillar Crypts: You have natural holes in your tonsils known as crypts. Sometimes foreign material can be stuck within them and cause inflammation, pain, a foul taste in your mouth and bad breath. Most of the time these cause recurrent bouts of pain and swelling, and the definitive treatment is tonsillectomy. I suggest a visit to a good ENT physician for an evaluation and to discuss treatment.

Tonsillar stones: The tonsil have crypts which can harbor collection of debris, dead cells and bacteria. This hardens up to become what is called tonsillar stones. It is common in people with recurrent tonsillitis; they usually don't cause any symptoms and can be washed out with warm salt-water gargle. If it causes pain, see a dentist or ENT for evaluation. For recurrent tonsillitis also see ENT.
