Not usually: A well-done septoplasty operation will not usually change the appearance of the nose. Rarely, there could be some collapse of the nose if there was damage or loss of cartilage.

Nope: The septum is located inside the nose and divides the internal nose into right and left halves, so septoplasty will not change the nasal bones or cartilage that support the skin of the nose externally. Sometimes additional procedures are performed to change the shape of the nose concurrently,  and sometimes additional maneuvers are needed to open the airway that effect the external nose.

Not usually: The septoplasty can straighten a nose if it is corrected. Also if the septum is removed and the support lost the nose my sink in. This is seen in old boxers and called a saddle nose.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: It would be very unusual for conventional septoplasty performed for blockage of breathing to result in a change in the appearance of the nose.  However, in some cases, septoplasty alone may not relieve the blockage and cosmetic changes may be required in order to improve the nasal breathing.  This is called "septorhinoplasty" or commonly  a "nosejob".

had a septoplasty 5 weeks agon- my right nostril which had limited airflow. feel no change. its also dry and less senaitive, feel no tickle. thoughts?

Check with surgeon : You need to check with your surgeon. Sometimes, patients of mine who have had septoplasty try to see if there nose is clear by sniffing. They generate such high pressures sniffing in that they close their nostrils shut. Take a slow breath through your nose and if it's still blocked there may still be a deviation high or your turbinates might be blocking. Ask your surgeon and consider other opinion.

Saline irrigations.: After a septoplasty, usually, nothing needs to be done because the normal muco-ciliary clearance of the nose is automatically cleansing the mucus of the nose.  Warm saline (salt water) irrigations are always helpful.

Accepted Answer

Maybe: Septoplasty is a procedure for deviated septum.  The septum divides your nose in half.  Everyone has some deviation.  If you are symptomatic, have breathing problems which are not helped by medical treatment then you may need this surgery.

Septoplasty failure: Usually, when a septoplasty fails, it means that nasal breathing isn't improved as much as you might like or there might be a cisible change to the nose that is not desirable.  Sometimes this is because the septum bends after surgery and occluded the airway or you can have unanticipated collapse of the weaker cartilages that make up the tip of the nose.  It can possibly be corrected with revision.

ever since my septoplasty my nose has been dry and flakey on the outside. what can i do?

Moisturize: I doubt the dryness on the outside is directly related to what is going on inside your nose.  Applying a good moisturizer several times a day will likely be of benefit.

about half of my ints were removed during a sx i had 3 years ago for septoplasty. am i at risk for worsening of dryness and empty nose syndrome?

Accepted Answer

No: if you do not have it you should not be that likely to develop it. Just do not have any further turbinate surgery.
