No: There are no known specific causes of diverticulitis.  Diet does not seem to play a role.  A high fiber diet is recommended though not proven beneficial. The commonly heard advice to avoid small undigestible foods (such as nuts and seeds) because they may theoretically become lodged in a diverticulum is completely unproven and is probably little more than an old wives' tale.

Accepted Answer

Depends: Sometimes increased fiber intake in the diet recommended after diverticulitis can cause more gas and bloating of the abdomen as a side effect.  Over the counter products containing simethicone may be of some benefit with symptoms.

Enteritis: You may need colonoscopy. If not being seen by a GI doctor you might consider doing this.

: It sounds like it could be IBS or irritable bowel syndrome.  Could also be something else.  You need to have a physical exam in the office and have your stools checked for blood.  More history also needs to be obtained.  Florida has excellent gastroenterologists and I would see one in the office to get a firm diagnosis and treatment.

Obstruction: You may have had a diagnosis of diverticulitis at 22 but if you have had recurrent attacks, you may now have developped an obstruction from narrowing that occurs with healing. This is likely benign and if ibd, not uc but crohns dz. No matter what, this needs to be evaluated and i would recommend quickly. Any GI or colorectal could see this.

how painful is a full or partial bowel obstruction? im able to pass small amounts of stool and gas but still feel like i cant fully have a bowel movement. i have been on a clear liquid diet for the last few days for possible diverticulitis?

: Clear liquid diet can cause reduction in the volume and frequency of stools. In full bowel obstruction there is bloating, pain.no gas or stool coming out and nausea, vomiting, In partial the symptoms vary. Pl stay in care of doc treating you and any symptoms you worry about - let them check you. I hope you do well

Go to ER OR A DOCTOR: if you have acute diverticulitis you need a proper treatment pending the stages of your infection that will be be assessed by physical examination and CT scan if mild you stay on light diet and take oral antibiotic if moderate or severe you need IV antibiotic and IV fluid and you might have to stay fasting to prevent complicated diverticulitis that could mean surgery.so go and see a doctor please

Unlikely gastritis: Bright red blood is usually associated with disease of the left colon such as diverticulitis or hemorrhoids, but the latter is not typically associated with gas bloating. See your internist for an evaluation.

Symptoms: Symptoms of a diverticulitis flare include, abdominal pain (usually left lower side, but may be all over), possibly nausea, vomiting, rectal bleeding, fevers, change in bowels, bloating... If you think you are having a diverticulitis flare, please see your doctor to see if you need antibiotics. If untreated it could get a lot worse.
