Only water retaintio: Poor renal function may cause sodium and water retention, but in general is better to drink a lot of water and cut on sodium. It will prevent kidney stones
 if you know the cause of renal problem, more suggestions on diet ( low purine or uric acid for instance) can be made.

my uric acid has gone up from 5.9 to 6.5 in last couple of months. i drink 3 litres of water daily. i'm not over weight, do exercise. please suggest!

Stop worrying: You are worrying about nothing. Your uric acid levels are fine and require no treatment of any kind. My advice is never recheck it again and forget about it. It only matters if you have gout.

See your DR. : Allopurinal os a good alternative to controlling uric acid.  But you need to find out if you are a overproducer of ua.  Take a 24 urine test for ua and your dr will be able to advise on best oral treatment.

i fasted mainly on bread & water for religious reasons about a month and a half. for the first time in my life my urine exam showed uric acid crystals. i followed a gout diet since and uric acid in blood is 4.0, normal. can gout be cured in my case?

: Uric acid crystals can sometimes be present normally in urine. That does not mean you have gout. Specially if the serum uric acid is 4. Enjoy a normal dit and drink adequate water and you will be fine

Normal level: Likely pain from exercise unless not time related. Your uric acid level is within normal, less than 7.2. If you have other symptoms pls check locally with your MD but on your testimony alone,sound like business as usual.

Yes: Uric acid is a byproduct of protein consumption, an excess of which can cause gout or kidney stones. Though excess uric acid (hyperuricemia) associated with frequent episodes of gout or kidney stones may require prescription drugs for control, appropriate changes in one's diet is often all that is needed: good hydration, reducing purine intake (red meats), and neutralizing uric acid (lemon water).

Could be gout: There could be many different things contributing here.  One possibility is the problems are not related... The both water retention and ankle pain could be from being overweight if that is a concern.   Another possibility is that you can have gout , which is when elevated uric acid deposits crystals in joints which cause pain.  You should review these findings with the doctor that ordered the lab.

Treat uric acid: High uric acid can cause arthritis, gout, with pain, swelling etc.  You need to be evaluated for cause of elevated uric acid, as it can damage other organs as well, e.., kidney.

Not possible: How high is it? Elevated uric acid cannot be significantly reduced by any diet other than minimizing alcohol intake. If you have no history of gout or stones then treatment is not needed as a rule.

Gout diet: A diet low in purines, a type of protein found in meats, shellfish, anchovies, beer to name a few, and drinking lots of water is the best way to lower your uric acid. Vitamin C and coffee, black cherry juice may also lower uric acid.
