endoscopic ultrasound detect liver problems? will having a normal hida scan till our liver damage? i think i see broken vessels on my chest. ive had ct scan found spot on liver mildly inflamed gallbladder and ultrasounds showed nothing hida either?

: If your liver blood tests and an ultrasound of the liver are completely normal, I would be reassured that you have very  little chance of having liver pathology. A gastroenterologist or hepatologist can advise you best,however.

i've had normal blood labs, multiple normal ultrasounds and ct scans of my right upper quadrant. what are odds they all miss liver damage?

i have this fear that i have liver damage but abdominal ct scans and lfts are normal. i had a cholecystostomy back in october and im curious if they would have picked up on liver damage during that procedure. i binge drink 1-2 days a week?

: Your best early marker for liver injury are the liver function tests. Even if they looked at your liver in an open surgical procedure, the LFT's would be abnormal long before any obvious changes were evident. Your system may have kept up with your overindulgence. But if you keep it up it may not continue to.

Yes: Imaging studies such as a CT scan,abdominal ultrasound or MRI can detect fatty liver disease. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition where there is extra fat buildup in the liver &amp; affects about 20% to 40% of the US population. A liver biopsy must be done to determine if a person has non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). I wish you well!

Yes: A ct scan of the abodmen provides images that show your entire contents as though you were sliced in two at a given point. While no test shows everything, it shows the bones, soft tissues, organs, intestines, etc., so any issues identifiable by the ct scan can be read by a qualified radiologist and reported to your doctor.

Whats your complaint: Ct can show a lot of abnormalities if they exist. Fatty liver is often associated with alcohol or metabolic syndrome (diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia), although can be also seen due to more rare causes.

See ans: A cat scan is much more sensitive in seeing than us the ultra sound. For a condition as you say you need further evaluation.

Get Ultrasound: When it is small, ct cannot characterize them then ultrasound might help.

CT of the liver: Can show tumors, cirrhosis, bile duct problems, and overall size. Hepatitis (liver inflammation) can sometimes be suggested by the presence of fluid (edema) around the portal vessels but blood liver function tests are the standard by which liver inflammation is diagnosed.

my enlarged liver? ct scan shows it is free from disease. what is causing the enlargment?

Accepted Answer

Could be many things: Hepatomegaly is the medical term for an enlarged liver.  The ct scan can rule out the presence of liver tumors or really severe liver disease like cirrhosis, but many other types of disease that cause hepatomegaly won't be visible on the ct scan.  Additional blood tests might help narrow down the list of possible causes.
