Dangers?: Our physical therapists use recumbent bikes for patients with a history of back problems
it gives them more lumbar support
we really haven't had any problems as long as used correctly.

Similar: They are very similar. Stationary bikes are more similar to a typical bicycle while a recumbent bike allows you to sit down in a chair with a back. Some patients find sitting in a "chair" is more comfortable to exercise in. Test out each to find what works for you!

Keep up the regular: exercise but you may want to vary the type of exercise and intensity while incorporating not only cardiovascular workouts of various types with periods of increased intensity during each workout but also include some weight training and flexibility while avoiding overuse injury by being very repetitive or rapidly getting onto an exercise routine without proper planning.  Speak to your physician.

Sure: For example arm rotations, back flex, extensions, side flex, rotation, lateral hip, hamstring, quad. Lots of simple routines online. Book called stretching by bob anderson good resource.

30 to 45 minutes: The maximum recommended time for
aerobic exercise is between 30 to 45 minutes of exercise three to 4 times a week. Also, 
try to keep your maximum heart rate below
135 to 140 beats per minute.

Would be good!: Any sort of aerobic activity, done at least half an hour, would help with weight loss.  You may not burn as much on a recumbent bike, but if the alternative is not doing anything, the bike is much preferred. Kudos for taking the first step to better health!

I would say so: But it all depends on how you feel when using it.  If it feels good, it may be the best thing you can do for your back.  If it makes anything hurt, go very slowly and stop if it seems to cause persistent discomfort.  Congrats though on keeping active ANY WAY THAT YOU CAN.  It is the best thing you can do for arthritis of any kind, not to mention prevention of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimers.

I think any : Excercise is a great start. I would also watch what gets put into your mouth. The good think about the bike is if you are very heavy it doesn't put that mu ch stress on your knees. I would advise you to visit your doc for a good physical prior to any new onset workout. Meaning if you werent working out before..let them know...to make sure you can handle....

Stop: Recumbent bike may be causing damage.  Stop until you can be examined by a Sports Medicine expert.
