The body attacks itself after being triggered by an unknown mechanism (usually viral infections) and the pancreas shuts down resulting in a lack of Insulin production and high blood sugars (diabetes). Type 2 diabetes can happen in overweight kids due to Insulin resistance.

No: Diabetes has little to no effect on fertility.  Though diabetes can complicate a pregnancy, it can be managed by a trained ob/gyn physician.  In some cases the help of  a high risk OB (maternal fetal medicine) will be required.
