Usually Type 1: Though rates of type 2 dm are rising in this country, by far the most prevalent is type 1 in children, particularly pre-pubertal. Kids present with frequent, large volume urination, thirst, weight loss initially. Then they can start to vomit, get belly pain, and dehydrate. Insulin is the only treatment for type 1 diabetes in both kids and adults. Treatment is life-saving.

Difficult disease: This is a difficult to treat disease. Children suffer from constantly fluctuating blood sugars which lead to feeling bad with highs and lows. Insulin is the treatment either via shots or an insulin pump. New technologies include enhanced self management with continuous glucose monitors and faster insulins help families manage.
