A member asked:

How do children get diabetes.?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

DM1 is autoimmune: Type 1 diabetes mellitus is an equal opportunity offender & the majority of cases are caused by an autoimmune phenomenon. The body attacks itself after being triggered by an unknown mechanism (usually viral infections) and the pancreas shuts down resulting in a lack of Insulin production and high blood sugars (diabetes). Type 2 diabetes can happen in overweight kids due to Insulin resistance.
