Chordoma diplopia: Chordomas are rare, malignant tumors arising in the spine but which can spread elsewhere.  Most are large when first discovered and if located at the base of the skull can affect the nerves to the eye muscles leading to visual doubling (diplopia). This, along with headache, is the most common early symptom of chordoma.

Yes: By the nature of chordomas being involved in the spinal cord or canal, they are capable of pushing in nerve roots and even spinal cord both of which can cause severe pain or weakness.  There are other causes of such pain, but chordomas can cause it as well.  Should check with your neurosurgeon or neurologist.

Few symptoms: Chordoma is a rare malignancy of the lower sacrum, typically in male patients over 40. It is often associated with deep pain in pelvis/sacrum, and bowel obstruction due to the mass interfering with evacuation of colon. Neurologic symptoms are rare until late and include sciatica and bowel/bladder dysfunction. Tumors are slow growing, hard to resect/cure, and often found late in the disease.

They can: Yes, depending on the soft-tissue density, some chordomas create a shadowing effect and would indicate that a more eloborate imaging study is necessary.

Exclude hemorrhoids: Rare diagnoses are rarely correct. Chordoma is an uncommon tumor. It would be prudent to rule out hemorrhoids, that seem to be able to explain your symptoms, before considering other diagnoses.

Both are slowgrowing: Chordomas are very slow growing lesions but can experience early symptoms by the mass causing pressure on cranial nerves which exit from the skull base and can be worrisome. Based on the size, can vary from headache, runny nose/nose bleeding, facial numbness/tingling, vision changes (double vision), can be worse if too close to brainstem and optic apparatus.

we spoke to neurologist secretary and she said it's a notochord bnct. i will need follow up mri's as chordoma could develop. do you think biopsy is required? thank for your help.

Complex question: This condition is complex, so I hope the advice is coming from a neurologist, not his/her secretary. Benign Notochord Cell Tumor (BNCT) &amp; chordoma are very similar in origin. The main difference in them is how much contrast is taken up during an MRI. More contrast uptake suggests chondroma, a condition requiring biopsy &amp; surgery. BNCT may progress to chordoma. Pursue further: Not clear as to the nature of your MRI lesion, and appears there is some uncertainty by your physician.  Time for a second opinion.
Perhaps a neurosurgeon at a nearby medical school.

i have a small pea sized movable lump on my tailbone under my skin. noticed it about 2 years ago. not painful or red. pilonidal cyst? chordoma?

Neither likely: From your description it is neither chordoma nor pilonidal cyst. Depending on the firmness, it might be a fatty tumor (lipoma) or another type of cyst. Show it to your primary doctor.
