No: A retainer, if worn as directed, prevents tooth movement.  Clear plastic tray retainers are not really adjustable.  Your teeth may have to be realigned, with braces, clear aligners, or retainer-like wire/plastic adjustable appliances.  Please see an Orthodontic Specialist for best, most effective, least intrusive, most cost effective, solution to your problem.

how long will a hawley retainer take to close a very slim gap? plastic retainer broke and over time tension between front teeth loosened. now have a hawley so how long would wearing it 24/7 take to put the tension back?

: Teeth need to be moved slowly as to not damage the supporting bone. About . 25 mm per two weeks should be no problem.

Retainer Cleaning: Here are a few simple ways to clean your retainer: 
1. Rinse with water and apply friction with your fingers
2. Use your toothbrush, water and paste
3. Purchase a denture cleaning kit, it works perfectly for this.

will wearing a plastic retainer in ear during surgery be problematic?

Sure .... but why?: Unless you are having ear surgery, there should be no problem with wearing a plastic retainer, for whatever reason, during surgery.  If it has metal components, you may be asked to remove it to avoid the highly unlikely (but possible) chance of electrical currents used to seal blood vessels causing a burn on your ear at the site of that metal.  Let your surgeon & anesthesia folks know.  Good luck!

Once damaged, change: Once a clear aligner is damaged it need to be replace.  They are not providing the treatment intended anymore.

Retainer: all your orthodontist ASAP and get your retainer replaced.  Your teeth can shift or relapse if you wait.

: Moving teeth using plastic aligners is better accomplished when being treated by a dentist. Orthodontics is not a DIY endeavour. Yes, plastic aligners do work for many malocclusions but cannot always replace traditional wires and brackets. They are worn all the time, except when eating. Aberrant forces can damage your teeth and bony support.

Need adjustment: Retainers should fit well without denture adhesive.  If they are not fitting properly, they are not working properly.  Please return to your orthodontic specialist for an adjustment.

No Essix: Your Essix cannot be used for othodontic tooth movement. If you have tooth movement, your Essix would have to be remade. Or your dentist might be able to attach a tooth to the Hawley.

i need to know how do you properly clean the clear, plastic retainers?

Cleaning retainers: Gently rinse w water every time you remove them. 2x/day gently wash w soap/water. Rinse thoroughly before reinserting. 1x/day place in a small bowl, cover completely w room temperature water, then drop in a denture cleaning tablet...follow package directions.
