can tugging on the ears over and over cause a perforated ear drum? i have had muffled hearing/conductive hearing loss for almost a week immediately after having itched my ear hard. i tugged on my ear over and over trying to clear the muffle?

Exam needed: Common things are common and muffled hearing is commonly caused by buildup of wax in the ear canal. I doubt your actions caused a perforated ear drum. If there is impacted wax in your ear canal an examiner won't be able to visualize the ear drum without first removing the wax, so see your MD or an ENT for evaluation and treatment which may include wax removal if needed.

Infection: of the ear would cause both.
It's a pretty serious condition that requires attention.

Accepted Answer

Go to ENT.: It might be moot at this point, but an ENT doctor can take a look to see if it's even still ruptured at this point.  You can always decide from there, and the actual examination shouldn't hurt at all.

Self test: If you have a perf &amp; smoke or can get a cigarette you can see smoke come out of your ear if you hold the smoke in your mouth &amp; bear down. The healthier thing would be to have it looked at. Perforations in adults can heal if they are small &amp; usually do so the first few days.

a middle ear infection caused an eardrum perforation in my left ear. is it possible for me to safely use headphones in my call center job? i am concerned about how the headphones would affect my ears in this situation. what steps should i take?

: Ear drum perforations usually heal with the resolution of infection. If your hearing in the affected ear is normal, using headphone will not hurt. Do keep the sound level at the lowest loudness compatible with your job. If there is any discharge in the ear, it would, be prudent to see your doctor.

Yes: But it depends on the size, reason for, and location o the perforation. Also the possibility that one of the hearing bones might "dislocated" or eroded needs to be evaluated. This can be determined by a thorough ear exam and a hearing test.

Trauma: External trauma (such as a severe force to the ear or head) as well as very loud noises can perforate the eardum in addition to internal trauma.

2 questions: If you can blow smoke out of your ears (like a carnival act) you have a hole in your ear. To verify it a simple exam will see it. The hole itself can drop your hearing sensitivity a small degree depending on the size of the hole. We actually put tubes (with holes) in toddler ears all the time to improve their hearing.

No problem: A wax impaction does not harm a perforation.  As an ENT i suggest that all perforations be repaired via a tympanoplasty  or myringoplasty at some point.  An intact ear drum is safer and less likely to become impacted.  Patients who choose not to have a tympanoplasty  should have an annual ear exam by their doctor.
