A member asked:

What will happen if an impacted ear with wax and a perforated ear drum gets left untreated?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No problem: A wax impaction does not harm a perforation. As an ENT i suggest that all perforations be repaired via a tympanoplasty or myringoplasty at some point. An intact ear drum is safer and less likely to become impacted. Patients who choose not to have a tympanoplasty should have an annual ear exam by their doctor.
