dad had arthroscopy knee surgery week ago. post surgery he is having pain in calf muscles. is this unusual or associated with the post surgery?

Not always normal: Although calf pain can occur after knee arthroscopy, the concern is the potential for a deep venous thrombosis otherwise known as a blood clot. You need to contact your surgeon and have him evaluated for the potential of a blood clot. It is not necessarily a clot however you should check this. This is done with an ultrasound.

Get it checked!!!: You should get this checked out.  It could be just expected swelling, but it could be a blood clot in your leg. Get this checked out right away!

Compartment syndrome: It is unlikely that the fluid went down your leg. It is more likely that you are having a vascular complications from the surgery and you should go to your emergency room immediately for an ultrasound examination. There's a condition called compartment syndrome which is a surgical emergency.

Blood clot?: Pain in the calf that goes into the foot with swelling could signal a DVT.  (deep vein thrombosis).  This is unusual after knee arthroscopy, but certainly possible.  Hopefully the ER did an ultrasound of your calf and leg to evaluate for this.  If not, please see your surgeon urgently.

No: Calf pain is not normal after knee surgery. I would go back to your orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible. You can possible have a blood clot in your calf after surgery. If you have asleep venous thrombosis that could be life threatening.

See details.: This is obviously not a normal result from what i assume to be arthroscopic surgery. You should not still need a brace and should not be in pain. Calf swelling can be secondary to phlebitis or the rupture of a popliteal cyst among other causes. Get a 2nd opinion. I would strongly recommend a new MRI if you have not recently had one done.

Very common: Quad muscle atrophy after knee surgery is very common and often overlooked as a continuing source of problems.  Several months of routine thigh strengthening exercises are needed post-op to return to 100%.

See therapist: Could be a number of problems:
scar tissue from sugery.
Irritation of the tissues in the surgical path, 
some other structure, tendon or ligament,  outside the knee joint.
Have a physcial therapist trained in orthopedic physical therapy manual do a through exam.

Normal: I assume you had arthroscopic knee surgery;muscle spasms after knee arthroscopic surgery are both normal and not uncommon.From the surgery itself, the use of a "leg holder" or tourniquet(if used)--muscle spasms will occur.If they continue or become more severe or long -lasting, check w/ your surgeon.Good luck!
