i have a "severe bone bruise" of the metacarpals and was placed in a cast they dr said they would call back for follow-up how long will wear this cast?

If the bone: is not broken, generally the will leave the splint or cast on for 1-2 weeks. If there is a fracture, usually the cast stays on for 4-6 weeks. At your next doctor visit, they will probably take another Xray to make sure there was not a small fracture that didn't show up on the first Xray. Hope this helps!

i have a bone bruise in my 5th metacarpal and has been about 2 months since the injury. bone is still tender and painful but have full movement. i do have an ortho appointment this week but was wondering how likely it is that i will end up in a cast?

: Unless a repeat x-ray shows a "non-union" fracture, healing should be stable after "two months", and a soft cast might be useful, but  not require a rigid cast.

Depends: A bone bruise, as opposed to a bone fracture, does not need to be put in a cast in the sense of protection from displacement.  But a cast can be useful to control swelling, potentially help with pain, and may make the hand more functional while you are recovering.  I certainly would discuss with your doctor the different options for immobilization that are available.

Depends: That is a fairly extensive cast for a "bone bruise" as you put it.  A bruise does not necessarily have to be immobilized at all; but sometimes we will to control swelling, improve function, or we are concerned there may be more to the injury.  Don't hesitate to discuss with your orthopedic surgeon.

bruised metacarpal 5 weeks ago. bone still tender to press, random pain in hand and pain when scrubbing things. swelling has not gotten better. its my dominant hand so it gets alot of use. how long until the tenderness goes away?

A long time: Bones take a long time to heal: 3 months minimum, sometimes a year for full recovery. It also sounds like you may be inadvertently exacerbating it since you use your dominant hand (of course). Drug stores sell wrist braces - you might try one to protect your metacarpal, remind you that it needs to be shielded, and to partially immobilize it. Or you could try taping it.

Yes: A bone bruise is actually a stress fracture.  The inner trabeculae of the bone actually break.  The healing of the stress fracture conincides with symptom resolution.

Protect it: Protect the injured area with metatarsal pads or a padded orthotic to wear in your shoe. May also want to add in an over the counter anti inflammatory medication if not allergic.

Depends: It really depends on the severity of the injury to the scaphoid but i would say at least 4-6 weeks with supportive brace and rest as much as possible.
