Depends: A bone bruise, as opposed to a bone fracture, does not need to be put in a cast in the sense of protection from displacement. But a cast can be useful to control swelling, potentially help with pain, and may make the hand more functional while you are recovering. I certainly would discuss with your doctor the different options for immobilization that are available.
