Bleeding: It depends. If it is bright red blood it could be an area of irritation at surgery site or anastomosis, an ulcer, a blood vessel or other complication of surgery. Other conditions unrelated to surgery such as hemorrhoids and diverticulosis can result in bleeding. You need to talk with your doctor to clarify what you are noting.

i had a bowel resection on monday. since last night i have been having bloody stools (first like coffee grounds, now red blood.) i have been going pretty frequently. my hemoglobin was 10.8 this morning but by noon it was 8.3. is this okay?

: This suggests significant ongoing blood loss. I hope you are in the hospital being monitored. You need to discuss this with your treatment team.

See your doctor: The streaking you describe may be due to a bunch of different things.  You may have a hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, an AVM, or maybe even cancer.  

I would speak to your doctor and get another rectal examination.  In the absence of hemorrhoids, you doctor may advise that you get a repeat colonoscopy.

Internal hemorrhoids: Colonoscopy can mix issues in the distal rectum.   You might have internal hemorrhoids so I suggest a simple sigmoidoscopy or even proctoscopy to assure there in nothing going on lower down.

Muscle spasm: Occasional flat stools are usually a combination of soft stool and tight muscles.  Consistently flat stools are of concern, especially if combined with needing to strain to pass stool or pain with passing stool.  However, since you are having some bleeding an examination is indicated to make sure it is not something more important.

Not normal: Blood in the stool is not normal and needs to be explained. Causes can range from  local irritation, anal fissure ( crack in the tissue),  hemorrhoid, polyp, to cancer. Blood on the outside of the stool is more likely to be caused by a fissure or hemorrhoid. You will meed to see a health care provider to get a diagnosis.
