Look elsewhere: Sickle trait would not account for a hemoglobin of 6. There's another cause.

Maybe, but not best: A routine blood test can show sickle cells, but they may not be reviewed that closely.  The best test is a special test of the hemoglobin, called hemoglobin electrophoresis.  Sickle cellis also screened on all children born in the us.  Your pediatrician should have these results.

Don't smoke: Sickle cell CARRIERS are almost always free of symptoms.  They should simply avoid marrying and having children with other carriers.  Someone with sickle cell DISEASE is chronically anemic and subject to episodes of bone pain.  "Sicklers" should maintain good fluid intake, NEVER smoke cigarettes, and establish ongoing relationship with hematologist.  Drug therapy (hydroxyurea) can help some.

Not unless: any of them are part of a screen for drugs of abuse. Don't you worry that the THC will negatively impact your condition? I would encourage you to be honest with your medical provider.

Medical Testing: If your physician did not complete this testing and provide you with appropriate information you may need to change physicians or see a sickle cell specialist (usually a hematologist).

The test for sickle: Cell hemoglobin is an electrophoretic technique, or alternatively, a test based upon differential solubility/ppt. Drug screens use a completely different technology. The tests must be done separately, and have no effect, one on the other. If you're asking because you have sickle cell disease and have been smoking marijuana, i'd advise you stop the latter and follow your dr.'s advice for the former.

Why do you ask?: If the smear is viewed and reported, and the physician reads the full report, you'll be told whether you have sickle cell disease. The trait requires some special testing. Classic sickle cell disease is not subtle, but there are variant hemoglobins related to the classic disease that are more subtle, and may be missed until adulthood. Gene testing's best for these. if my child had a blood transfusion as a child and the blood might have had sickle cell disease, could he get the disease?

No: Blood cells transferred to your child during a transfusion wear out & are disposed of within 3 months, usually less. There are no cells that could change your childs bone marrow into producing sickle cells. That information passes in the dna at conception, without it in the dna your child  won't ever make sickle cells. It is not like an infection.

Nothing: They are not associated. A low white count is found in about 15% of african americans and has no clinical significance.
