what to do if i have bright blood in stool and bleeding?

Hemorrhoids bleed: Blood in the stool is never "normal". However, bright anal blood on the outside of stool is usually from hemorrhoids (swollen anal veins). They are not serious and warm baths with epsom salts and a cream like anusol will help.
However, if the bleeding is persistent, do see a doctor for an examination.

You need further evaluation.

Accepted Answer

Probably is normal: Blood around the stool is normal, not in the stool. The most important treatment for hemorrhoids is sitz baths, sitting in a tepid bath every day, reducing straining by eating lots of fiber and staying well-hydrated  to bulk your stools.

Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids can cause rectal bleeding and so can other colon issues that can be evaluated with a colonoscopy

Hemofrrhoids: If the blood was on the outside of the stool and on the paper without any other symptoms, this is very unlikely to be anything else.

is it possible to have bleeding in your colon without blood in stool? my hgb is below 7.1, my bowels are slushy and full of mucus but no blood in stool or towel. could this still mean i am losing blood from the colon?

: Yes, while sometimes the bleeding is macroscopic or visible, many other times the bleeding is microscopic and the stool can be easily checked for blood traces through different methods, some available commercially, under fecal occult blood test. Best would be to keep your main docs involved, primary care doc and gastroenterologist, so that decisions are made in proper context.

See doctor: See a doctor and get the hemorrhoids treated. Bleeding from hemorrhoids can cause anemia.

You need: To see a GI doctor or colorectal surgeon, sooner rather than later before it becomes a life threatening emergency! this does not seem like something you should wait on for a few days to "see if it gets better". If necessary go to the nearest emergency room! take this situation very seriously.

Every time a patient: With cirrhosis and ascites who develop GI bleeding, the patient should be evaluated by his gastroenterologist asap. If you have any neurological symptoms like lethargy, dizziness, confusion, headache, tremors, rapid heart beating, near fainting, sweating please go to an emergency room asap. Also if the bleeding is profuse.

1wk post delivery and having painful bowl movements. no blood in stool, just normal bleeding from delivery. no straining and have headaches. normal?

Stool softener: It may help to take a stool softener, or better yet a fiber laxative like Metamucil. Drink enough water so that your urine is mostly colorless.
