No: Anxiety does not cause a heart murmur. Sometimes people with panic disorder also have mitral valve prolapse that causes the heart murmur. One person may have mitral valve prolapse diagnosed by testing on one occasion and it might not be seen next time it is tested. There was a theory that mitral valve prolapse and the chemical or genetic problem causing panic disorder occurred due to an insult to the fetus in utero on the same day during development.

i have a slight heart murmur & anxiety. dr told me not to google it. i took baby aspirin a couple days because of quick sharp chest pain likely from my gastritis. now i'm worried the aspirin may flare gastritis or flare my palpitations, is it safe?

: I don't worry that aspirin will halt or cause cardiac irritability, but it can cause or aggravate gastritis. Have your palpitations been checked by wearing an outpatient heart monitor to determine whether you're experiencing true cardiac arrhythmias?  If they are identified, are they high grade serious or benign and a nuisance? If they bother you, beta blockers may suppress them. ?See cardiologist

Yes: A heart murmur is not synonymous with a heart problem, in fact most murmurs are normal.  Murmur is a term used to describe certain types of "squirting" sounds heard over the heart with a stethoscope.  Anxiety makes our hearts beat faster and harder making the blood move faster which in turn makes its exit from the heart noisier.  Check with your doctor to make sure your heart is normal.

When : When you feel your heart beating in groups of three, you may have a minor arrhythmia called trigeminy.  With this condition every third heart beat is a premature beat.  After the skipped beat there is typically a brief pause and then the normal heart beats begin again.  Most of the time these heart beats are benign and are not a marker of anything serious.  
Factors that might increase these irregular heart beats include stress, caffeine, alcohol, lack of sleep, cold/viruses, or any other physical or emotional stress.

If your heart were to start racing for an extended period of time, or if the irregular heart beats were associated with difficulty breathing, lightheadedness or chest discomfort i would recommend you contact your doctor. Otherwise it sounds like no further evaluation or treatment is needed.

Angina: Cardiac pain does not have this character. Your pain is made worse by your anxiety. The cardiologist will evaluate your status to see if there is a cardiac problem.

Yes: It is certainly possible to have a murmur that changes with position; an innocent pediatric murmur often will change with position.  You may want to have a second opinion.

i have had a recent few weeks with very bad anxiety, went for a simple physical and the pa said she may hear a slight heart murmur. can my recent stress cause this? no other symptoms. my blood pressure was high as well. 140/100?

: A heart murmur can sometimes be heard when either the blood pressure or heart rate are increased. Either or both can be increased with anxiety so it is possible that your increased anxiety could be the etiology of this heart murmur. Getting your anxiety under control and then seeing if the heart murmur goes away would be a way to determine if this is the etiology. Good luck to you!

: It is better to invest in stress management training with a life coach/therapist than to rely on the transient effect of drugs. The former can help for a lifetime, the latter until you run out. If I listen to a patient often enough, I will likely eventually hear a benign murmur. If it didn't require treatment, it is not worth worrying about.

No: Absolutely not. There's no relationship between a murmur from any cause and panic attacks. Moreover, many murmurs are innocent. If you want to know the cause of your murmur, ask for an echocardiogram. Since it apparently wasn't spontaneously offered to you, you may discover that it is entirely incidental and of no consequence.

Sug Echocardiogram: A Murmur is usually generated by a heart valve. There are 4 valves and murmurs can be generated during contraction and during relaxation. One valve almost always causes a contraction leak, which may have been inaudible before but brought out by hypertension as a murmur. In one valve a murmur is rarely normal. However a new Murmur requires investigation.
