Imaging: CT stone protocol is without contrast. This picks up the stone better. A CT of the abdomen and pelvis  is one year of background radiation.  If you have further stone analysis ask your provider to consider and ultrasound first.

if a person had road accident due to seizure. then after two hours of accident will seizure show in.ct scan or not?

Accepted Answer

Not: Ct scans show brain structure but do not show brain function.  A seizure is a disorder of brain function,  and so cannot show if someone had a seizure.

my son had a seizure a couple weeks ago and now we have noticed two lumps on his head. the ct scan was normal and didn't show any abnormalities.

Accepted Answer

Further Eval needed: If this was his first seizure ever, then he needs additional evaluation with a pediatric neurologist.  Workup may include an MRI of the brain, EEG or other testing.  More than likely, the lumps on his head are the result of the seizure and are related to mild head trauma.  I would recommend that he see a pediatric neurologist.

Not usually: A seizure is uncontrolled electrical activity in a portion of the brain, which sometimes extends to involve the whole brain.  Symptoms can be as little as a "1000 mile stare", to extreme flailing of the arms and legs.

If the seizure is due to a mass in the brain, ct may see it, but MRI is better.  Usually, the cause of seizures is a tiny "scar" in the brain, hard to identify even on ct or pet/ct.

SEIZURES: There are many causes of seizures. Below 5 it could be febrile seizures. Petit mal, psychomotor , plumbism are to be ruled out. Pls. See a peds neurologist for consult.

Possibly: Generally ct scans show anatomy; they do not show function (pet scan needed for that). However, ct may detect  an anatomical abnormality (like an arteriovenous malformation) that might be a seizure focus. Work-up for new-onset seizures usually includes an eeg.

Reaction: Are the bobs in an area where the EEG electrodes were placed?  We use a mild adhesive to keep them on the scalp which can irritate the skin in some cases.

Probably: One seizure in 30 years with no central nervous system lesion to account for it (ct normal) and no progression (no further seizures - free of them for 14 years), leaves little reason for concern or to justify the eeg. This is if you are on no anticonvulsants. And assuming you do not have ongoing neurologic symptoms like difficult to treat headaches, perceptual changes, muscle weakness, lapses, etc.

i'm having seizure like symptoms, had a ct scan w no dye that came back negative, but they suggest i get an eeg? what can that show that ct scan dont?

Schedule EEG: This is a recording of electrical activity of brain, like an electrocardiogram evaluates heart.  Unique that a cat scan would diagnose epilepsy if large lesion is absent.  Abnormal eeg activity will assist your doctor in arriving at an appropriate diagnosis.

is it safe to get an mri contrast a few hours after ct contrast? how safe is the contrast? i heard it had lawsuits behind it. the reason for testing is a seizure since they could not find anything on the ct scan?

Accepted Answer

: Would delay the second contrast injection for at least 24 hrs, as there is a remote risk of kidney problems and too much contrast over a brief time would provide additive risk.  Make sure you are well hydrated prior to the MRI.
