Q: can ct w/contrast reliably characterize small (<5mm) hepatic cysts?

Cyst fluid filled: Cysts are fluid filed, typically benign. Solid could be benign (not cancerous) or not. Small are typically benign. Ct may not be able to differentiate small solid abnormalities. Plan depend on other factors-may be monitor over time for stability. Cysts may not get followed.

Q: i have tiny thyroid nodules only on the left well under 5mm. i also have a 5mm complex cyst within the thyroid cartlidge. where exactly is that? is any of this concerning for cancer or precancer?

: The thyroid cartilage is your “adams apple “. What your describing does not sound cancerous or precancerous, but I think your prescribing care provider should review these findings with you.

Q: my mri suggests possible 5mm synovial cyst on tmj joint. my neurologist says not to worry they are common. what are the chances it's cancer?

I would not worry: 5 mm sized cysts are benign. Unless it grows in size to over one inch, I would not do anything right now. Your doctor can monitor it once every 6 to 12 months and tell you if it is growing or not. if it does not grow in size, you can leave it alone.

: The concern here would be nonthyroid pathology within the thyroid cartilage. Since a biopsy from this complex cyst is needed for a definitive tissue diagnosis, I'm unclear as to how an ultrasound makes a diagnosis of nonmalignancy if I understand the report correctly. . I recommend consulting an ENT specialist for evaluation &amp; advice. I'd like advice such as is a biopsy recommended? CT scan? MRI?

: Your thyroid function is normal so you won't be treated and no other med can shrink the nodules. You will need a follow up ultrasound in 12 months just to make sure the nodules have not changed. Good luck.

Probably not: A small kidney cyst is of no concern.  The 2.5mm "hypodensity" is likely an additional tiny cyst that is simply too small to diagnose accurately as a cyst on CT.

It is a round fluid: Filled ball like mass that has divisions in it and looks like it is filled with blood. A simple cyst has no internal divisions. Like a grapefruit would be complex but a blown up balloon simple!!

10x9mm hypervascular lesion (prob focal modular hyperplasia) & 5mm cyst on my liver-right lobe. no symptoms. are these something to be concerned about?

Probably not: Both types of lesions are benign - especially when they are this small. Best to d/w you doctor if these lesions need to be followed or not.

The probability: of the MRI mass being cancerous depends on a number of MRI features, including the shape and borders of the mass, and the way it enhances after the contrast injection.  So there is not enough information to make an assessment .  The fact that it wasn't seen on U/S doesn't make much difference.  The cyst is benign.  What is the BIRADS code at the end of the report? That gives the level of suspicion

Ovulatory cyst: Likely to be an ovulatory cyst, period flow should follow in two weeks or so, or pregnancy.
A persistent cyst can be evaluated by your doctor.
