Why do you think a single what sounds like fairly good-sized wart was HPV? And where was the wart? HPV typically forms clusters of very tiny warts. When it does go into remission it usually stays there. But there is no reason to assume a random wart is HPV, it probably wasn't.

It is difficult to predict and depends on your immune system and the type of virus causing the wart. It could go either way
