Nobody is at fault. Everybody gets HPV, most often during youthful dating, when most people are most sexually active. There is no special way dormant HPV "works"; reactivation is random, and newly diagnosed HPV often appears many years into monogamous relationships -- usually detected by Pap smear, sometimes with recurrent warts. Doesn't imply new partner. This should be no big deal for you.
