Both : Some people will completely clear the virus. In others it will lay dormant just above the basement membrane in the cell layers. You can not predict who this will happen to or do anything to change it other than avoiding smoking which decreases the risk of clearing the virus. Unless you are having manifestations of hpv the presence of the virus is not something to focus on.
