Asc-us on pap test. hpv negative- 38 years old. never had abnormal pap, never had hpv positive . says areas of partially obscuring inflammatory exudate present. what does this mean. can period blood cause this? please help. doc is on vacation?

The inflammatory exudate may have been discharge due to infection which may interfere with the reading. The good news is you are HPV negative. No precancerous infection. More info needed to determine if this PAP was adequate to make a decision for the next step. As always, once your doctor returns discuss the results with him/her. No need to worry, but you must follow up with your doctor.

"ASC-US" stands for abnormal squamous cells of uncertain significance, and does not suggest a malignancy, and may reflect just inflammation. A repeat smear after treatment of the "inflammatory exudate" may be entirely normal.

There is no cause for concern. Do follow your doctor's advice for follow-up tests. If your PAP is negative three years in a row, your doctor may limit the examination to once every three years. Wish you good health!
