A member asked:

Been taking norethindrone to control heavy bleeding for 2 years, i have pcos. it makes my pcos symptoms worse (facial hair etc) but helps with bleeding. i would like to switch to cyclic prometrium 100mg. should i transition?

Why not switch to a combined ocp ? As long as you don’t have contraindications to YAZ it has potential anti-androgenic (anti-male hormone) effects that can help with the secondary PCOS symptoms

With increases in facial hair and documented PCOS it is not the norethindrone which causes this. PCOS allows for constant and increasing estrogen stimulation via the ovaries, which is converted to male hormone analogs which can stimulate hair growth. Best is to take low dose oral bcp's, which turn off ovarian estrogen production and will control bleeding as well.
