A member asked:

Is bloodwork automatically tested for hiv/aids when it is being tested for other stds and anemia? is this routine or is screening different for each?

Maybe. Maybe not.: There are thousands of lab tests, so doctors and patients have to pick the ones that are needed for a particular situation. Lab tests are not chosen randomly, so a patient has to talk about his symptoms or ask about the testing. Sometimes, the doctor suspects a particular disease even if the patient doesn't feel sick. In those cases, lab tests will be ordered even though there are no symptoms.

Different for each..: There are hundreds of different blood tests that can be done. Your doctor decides what to order based on your symptoms, medical history and physical exam. Checking for anemia is pretty routine but checking for HIV or other STDs with a blood test is less commonly done. You can ask your doctor what tests were done. If you want HIV and STD tests, ask for them. Best wishes!
