See answer: The amount of virus that is shed is much less when the cold sore is starting to heal over, but it is still possible to get Genital HSV1. HSV is shed periodically even in between outbreaks and can be found in the saliva. On the other hand HSV1 is spread more easily to your lips than your genitals as the HSV1 virus prefers the former and the HSV2 virus prefers the genitals.
