First, oral herpes and genital herpes are very easy to transmit from person to person, and intra-personal spread can transmit from one to the other location. A blood test can establish presence of active disease, and treatment with antivirals can reduce the time for healing ulcers in either area.

The only way to know for sure is to have a swab test for oral herpes if and when you have an oral outbreak. However, most people in your situation have only genital HSV1, not oral -- and you cannot transmit herpes from your mouth. Also, a single cold sore is rarely due to new oral herpes. Your partner probably has longstanding oral HSV1 without symptoms, now have his first remembered outbreak.
