Are prostate exams painful?

They shouldn't, but.: Prostate exam for prostate cancer screen is usually performed digitally (with a gloved finger). It is a quick procedure to feel for nodules/masses. Pain depends on the individual; it is subjective. If there are cuts/fissure, previous trauma (emotional, physical or radiation) and or infection men may have pain. Most men do not experience pain with the exam, so p cancer screen should not be avoided.

Usually not: The prostate exam is generally done with a lubricated gloved finger. If the examiner is gentle and allows the muscles of the anus to relax this usually decreases the discomfort.
