Totally Different: Canker sores are called aphthous ulcers, occur exclusively in the mouth and the cause is unknown. A chancre is an ulcer found on genitalia and in the mouth caused by the spyrochete that causes syphilis. Canker sores are not contagious, but chancres shed live bacteria and can spread syphilis by contact.
