Pain versus painless: Canker sores are typically painful, tender, white. Mucous patches are painless, nontender, usually pink or the same color as other mouth tissues. Currently in the US, syphilis is rare except in a few population groups; 75% of cases are in men having sex with men. If you are heterosexual and not at high risk for STDs, syphilis is very unlikely. But see a doctor and have a blood test to be sure!
