Colonoscopy: This could just be hemorrhoids, but at 57 with blood in stools I would definitely recommend getting a colonoscopy to make sure there are no polyps. Colonoscopy is a screening test for colon cancer that is recommended for everyone older than 50 anyway, but with blood in stool it is even more important to have your colon screened.

Colonoscopy: Proper answer to a specific case needs clinic evaluation.Generally:Anal pain w BM can be from external hemorrhoids, but these should not cause blood on stool.Blood streaks on the BM can be from internal hemorrhoids, but these should not hurt.Colon polyps can bleed&potentially turn into cancer if ignored.Colitis can bleed& hurt&increases cancer risk.Blood on stool = see doctor, esp if >40 yrs old.

Start w/physical: Might be from internal hemorrhoids. If not, your Dr can help guide next referral (Uro/Colo-Rectal Surg/GI) and any preliminary imaging after an exam.
