Colonoscopy is it!: For common rectal or anal problems such as rectal bleeding or pain, a full colonoscopy is commonly "routine" at age 53. Depending upon the symptoms, a simple anoscopy or rigid or flexible sigmoidoscopy might be recommended. Importantly' rectal bleeding should never be attributed to hemorrhoids without an endoscopic exam to document hemorrhoids or, more importantly, rule out a malignancy.
