A member asked:

Ascus on a pap.. could it be cancer?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not. Follow: This result can sound concerning, but ascus ("abnormal cells of unknown significance") is extremely common. Some of the cervical cells on the pap looked abnormal but not clearly pre-cancerous. Depending on the type of pap your doc did, she may be able to tell you whether hpv might have caused this. Often ascus resolves, but please stay in touch with your doc and discuss appropriate follow-up.
